Biography

I was born in Chomutov, Czechoslovakia now the Czech Republic.  I live in Milford, Connecticut and have lived in Israel,Virginia, Boston, California, South Carolina and Omaha, Nebraska. I have a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University, graduate work at the Massachusetts College of Art and M.F.A. from Clemson University.

Collections

My work is many private and public collections across the U.S.A.

Artist Statement

The majority of my work is photo-based, but not obviously so. I began my exploration with a vision of integrating the photographic image with drawing . I experimented with various alternative photographic processes that allowed me to blend these mediums. I began to tear up old and new prints with abandon; no longer was I bound by a single layer of paper as I began making new visual analogies. With this new found liberating energy, I realized the torn element was a vital component in combination with a variety of mixed media as I began to create images without any pre-determined concept of a final piece.

I layer and manipulate a multitude of images that I assemble into a “visual dialogue”. The recognizable silhouettes (photograms) of an assortment of generic crowds of people are reduced to texture as they move throughout. They are also actors in my commentary about various concerns such as: earth, water, fire, war, seasonal change, the human condition, the environment and modern love.  I mimic these issues by layering, tearing, painting, burning and adding wax to a collection of my old and new prints that become recycled. Some of  these images can be described as having endured a level of “creative violence” resulting in a rich surface patina and others extremely colorful and playful. The two extremes satisfy my inquiry into world problems and the fantastical work by artists such as Hieronymus Bosch in his "Garden of Earthly Delights"(my series, "Modern Love: Revisiting the Garden"). Perhaps, in my mind's eye, they are related.

While conceptualizing the “Modern Love” series, I combined two square panels so that the bottom panel juts out like a step off the wall revealing decorative sides. In a similar display, the series "Fashion and Popular Culture," appropriates my father's photos of his window displays from the 1940's and 1960's. My fashion interest led the way to a series " All the Rage: Fashion Provocations" utilizing the ready-made Costco plastic torsos, a Surrealist's dream.

The “Slice of Life” series on triangular panels evolved into visual metaphors of specimen boxes of the earth and the sea.  Currently, I am in process of rediscovering the photogram process on outdated photo paper, without a darkroom. These are also visualized as specimens of “Urban Artifacts” on triangular panels.
